What must a Christian renounce?

The sermons identify five areas. Our will, to do God's will on the Lord's Day, in marriage, in the family and under providence. Our desires, which keep demanding. Our honour, when people's opinion draws us away from Christ. Certain people, when a relationship becomes an idol. And even life itself: whoever loses his life for Christ and the Gospel will save it (Mark 8:35).

Why does Christ speak so forcefully about renunciation?

Mark 10:29-31 closes the conversation with the young man who desired eternal life but would not give up his riches and was excluded from it. Christ speaks forcefully so that His disciples will by no means do the same. Matters of fundamental importance are at stake, so He introduces His words solemnly, includes each person, and adds an extraordinary promise for whoever renounces for Him and the Gospel.

What did Jesus mean by 'be perfect' in Matthew 5:48?

The term means being whole and sincere, but also completing, bringing to its end, filling all its parts. Jesus had just taught love for enemies: it is not enough to do 'something' and be satisfied with 'a little'; we must complete what He asks, looking to the Father as our model. It is not a call for a select group, but for men still growing, like any of us.

Can a Christian have integrity while still sinning?

Yes. The sermon distinguishes perfection of heart, which is compatible with our imperfections. God declared Job blameless and upright, although Job later confessed his faults. This perfection is the opposite of hypocrisy: seeking God with all one's heart, every day and in all things. Nathanael had much to learn, but in him there was no deceit; Judas, by contrast, only pretended to follow Christ.

What does Christ promise those who renounce for Him?

A hundredfold of what they renounced, already in this life, although with persecutions (Mark 10:30). Paul, for example, had mothers and open homes in many churches (Romans 16:13). And after this life, an imperishable crown (1 Corinthians 9:25), which is not salvation but the crown of the victors. Each loss for Christ is like a precious stone added to that crown.

What means does God use to perfect believers?

Above all, Scripture, given so that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work (2 Timothy 3:17). Also the ministry of pastors in the local church, whom Christ gives for the equipping of the saints (Ephesians 4:12). Every member should therefore receive the teaching with a good heart and seek their pastors' counsel. God works in this way through imperfect men.
